The Eightfold Path

The Eightfold Path

The Eightfold Path

1. Right understanding :
Understand the law of cause and effect, how our motivations generate results.
Understanding the law of impermanence, we cannot find lasting security in this world.

2. Right thinking :
Avoid entertaining thoughts full of desires, hatred,
of anger or resentment for which we will have to suffer the consequences.
Avoid following thoughts, memories and dreams that distance us from the reality of the present moment.
Avoid moping and worrying unnecessarily.
Avoid criticizing and judging others.
Just let desires and aversions pass like clouds in the sky.

3. Right word:
Once thought is freed from resentments,
speech will be able to express itself freely
with respect for all living beings.

4. Right action :
Avoid causing suffering to others out of selfish desires.
As we don’t know the long-term effects of our actions,
take care not to disturb our environment
but rather harmonize it.

5. Right way of living :
Be attentive to everything you do.
Integrate understanding and wisdom into your lives.

The last 3 points refer to the practice of meditation:

6. Right effort :
Effort is the root or foundation of all achievement.
Without effort, nothing happens.
But in right effort, energy is moderated by tranquility.
Just persevere in a balanced way without forcing.

7. Right awareness :
Be aware of everything that is happening in the present moment,
on a physical, emotional and mental level,
Do not allow unwanted thoughts to develop.
Recognize the grandeur of a moment free from thoughts.

8. Right concentration :
Train the mind to stay focused on an object e.g. breathing.
Bring the mind back to the focal point when it becomes scattered.
Do not generate negative feelings, but persevere calmly.
Little by little the obstacles are overcome
and the mind stays more easily in the present moment.

Our life is short and precious.
Be careful not to waste it.
Practice diligently in order to develop continuous attention,
a clear and peaceful mind.
